PORTFOLIO “Paludi e squame” – PORTFOLIO “Marshes and scales”
Il portfolio di Marco Colombo, volto a far conoscere la vita di rettili e anfibi italiani delle paludi, dei fiumi e degli stagni attraverso una serie di dieci scatti, ha ricevuto il premio Plongeur de Bronze al Festival Mondial de l’Image Sous-Marine di Marsiglia (Francia), uno dei più prestigiosi concorsi di fotografia subacquea del mondo (http://www.underwater-festival.com/)

01.Verso l’oscurità – Rospo comune (Bufo bufo) – Lombardia, Italia
Nelle acque scure e fangose di una palude, un maschio di rospo comune nuota dalla superficie verso il fondo dopo aver respirato. Gli antichi cespugli, ora sommersi dall’acqua, mi hanno attirato come possibile scenario interessante in cui cercare questi anfibi minacciati dalle auto durante le migrazioni riproduttive primaverili.
Towards the darkness – Common toad (Bufo bufo) – Lombardy, Italy
In the dark, muddy waters of a marsh, a male common toad swims from the surface to the bottom after breathing. Old bushes, now submerged by the water, attracted me as an interesting scenario where to look for these amphibians endangered by cars during breeding migrations every spring.
02.Drago in volo – Tritone crestato italiano (Triturus carnifex) – Lombardia, Italia
I tritoni crestati sono spettacolari anfibi che vivono in paludi, stagni e laghetti, dove arrivano in primavera dopo l’ibernazione nei boschi. I loro ventri colore di fuoco, tipici di entrambi i sessi, mi hanno attirato fin da quando ero piccolo! In questo scatto ho provato a mostrare una femmina nel suo ambiente subacqueo, anche se non è stato semplice… l’effetto del fisheye fa sì che sembri trattarsi di un drago volante.
Flying dragon – Italian crested newt (Triturus carnifex) – Lombardy, Italy
Crested newts are wonderful amphibians living in marshes, ponds and little lakes, where they arrive in spring after hibernation in the woodlands. Their fire-bellies, typical of both sexes, have been attracting me since I was a little child! In this photograph I tried to show a female in her underwater habitat, even though it has not been an easy mission! The fisheye effect results in a seems-to-fly dragon.
03.Verde liquido – Natrice tassellata (Natrix tessellata) – Piemonte, Italia
I serpenti sono rettili affascinanti e alcune specie vivono nei pressi dell’acqua dolce; tra di essi, la natrice tassellata è un predatore di pesci, che si muove in fiumi e torrenti durante le ore calde del giorno, ma a volte anche di notte. In alcune occasioni è possibile incontrare esemplari bellissimi e di grandi dimensioni, come questo, in piccole pozze dove a volte fanno guizzare la lingua per percepire la presenza umana.
Liquid green – Dice snake (Natrix tessellata) – Piedmont, Italy
Snakes are fascinating reptiles and some species thrive in freshwater environments; among them, the dice snake is a fish predator, moving in streams and rivers during the hot hours of the day, and sometimes having a nocturnal behaviour too. In some occasions it is possible to meet beautiful specimens, as this huge one, in little pools, where they sometimes investigate human presence with their flicking tongue.
04.Il respiro – Testuggine palustre europea (Emys orbicularis) – Sardegna, Italia
La testuggine palustre europea è una specie minacciata da vari fattori: perdita d’habitat, raccolta a scopo collezionistico e, ultimo ma non meno importante, introduzione di specie alloctone come le testuggini americane (Trachemys sp.). In questo caso stavo esplorando una palude mediterranea quando ho incontrato questa testuggine, qui nell’atto di salire in superficie a respirare; anche se l’acqua era molto torbida (visibilità meno di 1 metro) sono per fortuna riuscito ad ottenere uno scatto limpido.
Air breath – European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis) – Sardinia, Italy
The European pond turtle is a reptile species endangered by many factors: habitat loss, collection for keeping purposes and, last but not least, introduction of alien species, such as American pond turtles (Trachemys sp.). In this case I was exploring a Mediterranean marsh when I met this wonderful specimen reaching the surface in order to breath: even though there was a lot of backscatter (visibility less than 1 metre), I succeded in having a clear shot.
05.La rete – Rospo comune (Bufo bufo) – Lombardia, Italia
Nuotare negli stagni dà grandi emozioni ed è rilassante, in alcuni casi però è strano! Mentre stavo scattando delle foto questo maschio di rospo si è avvicinato nuotando ed ha provato ad accoppiarsi con il mio scafandro. La riproduzione dei rospi è esplosiva ed una sola volta l’anno, con un rapporto sessi sbilanciato verso i maschi, per cui questi ultimi sono attratti da qualunque cosa si muova in questa sorta di festino amoroso.
The net – Common toad (Bufo bufo) – Lombardy, Italy
Swimming and diving inside marshes is a somewhat strange practice, but it gives relaxation and great feelings. While I was taking some shots of mating toads, this male came towards my housing and tried to mate with it! This species only breeds once a year, and the sex ratio is unbalanced towards males, so they are attracted by everything moving in the water in this love frenzy.
06.Al confine dei mondi – Raganella italiana (Hyla intermedia) – Lombardia, Italia
Le raganelle sono anfibi simpatici e noti al grande pubblico; in primavera abbandonano le cime di alberi e cespugli e migrano verso stagni e laghi, dove i maschi cantano per attirare le compagne. In questo caso ho fotografato un individuo al confine tra due mondi, l’acqua e l’aria, su dei tronchi morti semisommersi.
Worlds’ border – Italian tree frog (Hyla intermedia) – Lombardy, Italy
Tree frogs are very nice and familiar to the great public; during springtime, they leave their shelters on the top of branches and bushes and migrate to ponds and lakes, where males attract females with their melodious singing. In this case I photographed this specimen at the border between two worlds, the water and the sky, in a split view near some submerged dead trees.
07.Inferno subacqueo – Tritone punteggiato (Lissotriton vulgaris) – Lombardia, Italia
I tritoni punteggiati sono piccoli anfibi difficili da ritrarre con il grandangolo, ecco perché in questa situazione ho deciso di stare più lontano ed utilizzare un tipo di illuminazione creativa, aiutato anche dalla presenza di uova di rana sullo sfondo.
Underwater hell – Smooth newt (Lissotriton vulgaris) – Lombardy, Italy
Smooth newts are little amphibians, difficult to photograph with a wide-angle lens. That’s why in this case I decided to stay far and use a creative illumination to represent an “underwater hell”, also helped by the presence of frog’s eggs on the background.
08.Silenzio subacqueo – Rana temporaria (Rana temporaria) – Piemonte, Italia
Il mare ha le onde, il fiume le cascate. Ma quando nuoti in una pozza, sei solo circondato da un grande silenzio… in questo caso stavo ritraendo alcune rane quando ho deciso di realizzare uno scatto a questo individuo fermo su una roccia ricoperta da filamenti vegetali verdi.
Underwater silence – Common frog (Rana temporaria) – Piedmont, Italy
Sea has waves, stream has waterfalls. But when you swim in a mountain pool, only a great silence surrounds you… In this case, I was taking photographs of mating common frogs, when I found this specimen sitting on a flat rock covered by green algae.
09.La cresta – Tritone crestato italiano (Triturus carnifex) – Lombardia, Italia
I maschi di tritone crestato sfoggiano in periodo riproduttivo, come il nome suggerisce, una cresta dorsale. Fotografarli di lato permette di mostrare sia questa caratteristica che il ventre colorato, tipico invece anche delle femmine.
Swimming crest – Italian crested newt (Triturus carnifex) – Lombardy, Italy
As their name suggest, male crested newts show a beautiful, dragon-like crest on the back. Photographing them from the side permits to show both their colourful belly (like females’ one) but also the crest.
10.Testuggine split – Testuggine palustre europea (Emys orbicularis) – Sardegna, Italia
Le testuggini palustri termoregolano sulle rocce e i tronchi della riva, per cui nuotando è possibile incontrarle nell’acqua bassa, condizione utile a scattare fotografie come questa metà dentro e metà fuori dall’acqua.
Split turtle – European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis) – Sardinia, Italy
Pond turtle spend some time on the shores basking in the sun and resting; while swimming, it is possible to meet them in shallow water, and in this case I decided to choose a split view of the Mediterranean marsh and the escaping turtle.
